Meads

One day at the Home Brew Group in Manchester Pen tried Joe’s Ancient Orange Mead made by Aaron. Pen hadn’t had any interest in mead until that point and then, suddenly, she was hooked. The recipe and process were very simple – less than an hour start to finish and just normal, supermarket, items.

We tried making it ourselves and it seemed to work. Meads take time to clarify (weeks to months) and time to mature (months to years) but a standard gallon demi-john is ideal and produces enough mead to keep someone happy for a good few months.

Joe's Ancient Orange Mead 2018

A very simple mead that uses an orange, raisins, cloves and cinnamon.

Maple & Tea 2018

A rather pleasant mead made with Grade B maple syrup and a black tea infusion.

Lime 2018

This lime mead caused problems in that it just didn't ferment with MJ M04 Mead yeast. We think that the lime made it too acidic so we tried it with bread yeast (more low pH tolerant) and that seemed to work. Not the best of the meads so far.

Ancient Metheglin 2018

A mead made with a variety of herbs and spices: rosemary, thyme, bay leaf, clove, mace, nutmeg and ginger. Very tasty.

Raspberry & Ginger 2019

A deep purple mead that contains a lot of raspberries.
